the highway code

The Highwat CodeThe Highway Code is the simplified ‘rules of the road’. It covers car drivers and other road users. It is updated to take into account new ways of driving, the use of mobile phones, for example, but this isn't exactly frequent.

The Highway Code is available online and a handy pocket-sized book.

Your knowledge of the Highway Code will be tested during both your theory test and your practical driving test - so it's important that you know your stuff as you’ll be using it every time you drive.

What the Highway Code won’t tell you is the consequences of being convicted of breaking one of the motoring regulations but you can find out about driving penalties here.

One of the most commonly broken regulation is speed limits. With the rapid rise of speed cameras, fixed, mobile and average-speed, an increasing number of drivers are finding themselves with points on their licence. In the worst case, you can drive through 4 speed cameras ( or just 2 if you've had your licence for less than 2 years) at above the legal limit on the same day and lose your licence but not knowing about it 'till the brown envelope lands on your doormat. You have been warned!
